Davenport Moving Musings

hiring commercial movers

3/9/2019

Moving boxes during an office move
As a business owner, you want to make sure you can move your business as fast and as efficient as possible. To help you save time and avoid stress, the best thing to do is to hire a commercial mover so that you can focus on running your business and generating income. There are a lot of commercial movers whatever city you are in. However, it can be a challenge to find a company that will fit your specific needs. We have listed some things to consider to help you decide whether it is the right commercial mover for you or not.

Your First Impression of Office Movers
Your instincts may play an important role when choosing the right company for the job. If the company promises to callback but doesn't or doesn't reply to your emails and seem disorganized with their plans, this could be a tell-tale sign that they shouldn't be trusted. Never underestimate your first impression of the company because it might save you from unnecessary trouble in the future.

Professional Expertise and Experience
Commercial relocations are different from residential or even local moves. Make sure that the company you are hiring has past experiences in the field to ensure that they know what to do. Their knowledge and expertise will help them deal with unexpected problems during the move, and they can prevent issues from arising. They can provide you with expert advice on how to prepare your office items for a better and faster process on the day of your relocation. Further, an experienced company is proven effective when it comes to moving your office items.

Reviews from Other Customers
We cannot deny the importance of customer reviews, but we cannot always rely on them. Try to look for reviews that talk about the same service as what you will require the company to get a fair comparison. The review should talk about the things related to your move. If they say a lot of positive things about the company, you can be more confident that you are hiring the best company to provide you with the service you need. Don't get quickly discouraged when you see negative reviews about the company, instead consider the circumstances and try to understand that unexpected delays or stress can still happen no matter how much planning you put on it.

Ability to Manage a Project from Start to Finish
Your company has particular requirements for your office relocation. It is essential that the commercial movers can keep up and adapt to your requests and handle every detail of the job from start to finish. Office movers may need to work with third-party contractors to ensure the success of your relocation. If the company shows professionalism and organization, it must be the right moving company to handle the job.

Don't just settle with any commercial movers out there. Your business is important, and you should allow only the most qualified and trustworthy moving company to relocate your office items and your entire office.

time-saving moving tips

2/1/2019

Relocating from one place to another require time to prepare all the essential details for your move such as packing and selling your home. Most clients would ask how they can manage and save time when moving. In this blog, we listed some valuable time-saving tips for moving.

  • Place boxes and small items in one place in the ground level of your house. Ideally, you can have them stacked in the living room or the garage, but if these areas are not available, you can put them anywhere near the entrance of each room for easy access by the moving crews.
  • You will save time if you take care of items such as furniture and pictures before the day of the move. Try to disassemble your furniture before the day of your move because it will save you a lot of time. Also, do the following tips for a more efficient move:
    • Put away mirrors from dressers
    • Take away all vases from tables
    • Put away glass shelves out of cabinets
    • Dissemble bed
    • Take wall mirrors and frames off the walls. Place them against the walls in one area, so they can be easily accessed by you or the moving company you choose to hire.

  • Unplug and disconnect electronic items. Avoiding hassle on the day of the move is essential. Don't forget to wrap the cords and label them correctly so you would know where to connect them in your new place. For labeling, we highly recommend using paper masking tape so you can quickly write the label on it.
  • Remove all light bulbs and lamp shades. These items are fragile and need extra care when being handled. You should put these items inside a moving box to ensure they don't break or get damaged during the move. You can also load them in your car to make sure they don't get destroyed when packed with other items in the truck.
  • Plan where every box or item is going. One of the best ways to save time during a move is by organizing where each box should be placed in the house.
  • Use color-coding to label your items. It is a much better way to mark your boxes because there are times when a person's handwriting can be difficult to understand. You can put a green sticker or post-it for boxes that should go to the living room. You should also post the green sticker on the door of the living room so that the movers will know the proper designation.
  • Ask the mover to unload the boxes in one area only such as the living room or garage. This way, you don't have to go around every room looking for your items.
  • Help if you must. The moving company will be fully responsible for loading and unloading your items on the day of your move. However, you are free to move small boxes and other things that you can handle to the side of the truck. You should let the moving crew move the fragile and large items for safety reasons.

Preparing to move

9/10/2018

There are a number of preparatory tasks that should be done prior to moving.  Below is a list - often forgotten and not mentioned in other blogs or moving tips - that you will want to consider doing before you relocate:
  • Notifying the USPS of your change of address
  • Coordinating with utility companies on turn-off and turn-on
  • Coordinating with cable/sat TV providers of turn-off and turn-on
  • Cleaning out refrigerator and freezer of all items you don't want to have to move
  • Having a yard sale or posting items on classified ad boards of things you could sell vs having to move
  • Canceling home-based services, such as cleaners, yard care, etc.
  • Organizing clothing according to packing containers; boxes are good for most items but wardrobe boxes are a must for items that must stay hung up
  • Scheduling a cleaning service to clean you prior residence after the move and your new residence before you move in
  • Scheduling with pet boarders or sitters to watch your pets during the move
  • Moving smaller items yourself days or even weeks prior to your move
  • Obtaining moving estimates from a number of moving companies in Davenport
  • Checking moving companies insurance and licensing information
  • Performing any repair or upgrade to your prior or new residence after you move out or prior to moving in, respectively - some major repairs or upgrades are easier to perform when the residence is empty and unoccupied
  • Having home inspections done early enough so that repairs can be perform prior to moving in
  • Submitting change of addresses to any subscription services, such as magazines, weekly/monthly food deliveries, etc.
  • Notifying friends and family of move dates and new occupancy date
  • Coordinating with local school districts, in terms of your children's first day of school.

We have found some of these items are often overlooked by our clients.  Consider this list the next time your are planning a local or long distance move from/to Davenport, IA or the great Quad Cities area.
